The Berbice Bridge is a pontoon bridge spanning the Berbice River about 5km north of New Amsterdam, opened in 2008. Before it was built, the only way across the Berbice River by road was a ferry — the bridge reduced journey times between coastal Guyana's east and west dramatically. It is one of the longest floating bridges in the Western Hemisphere.
The bridge itself is an unusual sight — a continuous line of floating pontoons supporting a road deck, with a section in the middle that can be opened to allow river traffic through. For travellers, it means the coastal route from Georgetown to Corriverton (the Suriname border crossing) is now a road journey rather than a mixed ferry-and-road trip. Watching traffic cross it from the riverbank gives a sense of how significant the infrastructure was for this part of Guyana.
