The Mission Chapel on Main Street in New Amsterdam is a wooden Congregational church built around 1814, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in Guyana. The structure is in the characteristic Berbice style — wooden frame construction with jalousie shutters and a raised foundation — that once defined the streetscape of New Amsterdam but has been steadily lost to development and decay.
The chapel reflects the missionary work carried out in the Berbice colony among the enslaved population in the early 19th century. It stands as an unusual survivor from the pre-emancipation era. The building's condition varies; check locally before making it a specific destination. It's on Main Street in the centre of town and easy to pass on a walk through the colonial quarter.
