Convento de Santa Teresa

Living Carmelite convent and colonial art museum, quieter than Santa Catalina but full of period detail.

The Convento de Santa Teresa is a smaller, more intimate counterpoint to Arequipa's famous Santa Catalina. Founded in the early 18th century, it still has a cloistered Carmelite community, while part of the convent works as a museum of viceregal religious art, furniture, metalwork, textiles, and domestic objects.

The appeal is in the sense of continuity. You move through courtyards, chapels, and rooms that feel less staged than many colonial museums, with enough context to understand both the craft and the closed religious life behind it. It is a good second monastery visit if Santa Catalina made you curious rather than convent-fatigued.
