The area around Chachapoyas is extraordinarily rich in sites, most of which are day-trip distance from the city.
Kuélap is the headline — the massive Chachapoyas fortress accessible by cable car, about 1 hour from Chachapoyas. Most visitors come here first and then explore further.
Gocta Falls — 771 metres in two drops, one of the tallest waterfalls in the world. About 1 hour's drive from Chachapoyas and a 2–3 hour hike. Best done as a full day.
Karajía — the Chachapoyas cliff-face sarcophagi, eerie and unmissable. About 1.5 hours by road.
Revash — smaller mausolea built into cliff faces, less visited than Karajía, about 1.5 hours south. Often combined with a visit to the Museum of Leimebamba, which holds hundreds of Chachapoyas mummies recovered from a cloud-forest lagoon in 1997.
Leymebamba Museum — probably the best Chachapoyas archaeology museum, with the 219 mummies from Laguna de los Cóndores displayed in a carefully designed facility in the village of Leymebamba, 1.5 hours south of Chachapoyas.
