Huanchaco Wetlands

Coastal wetlands with totora reed beds — the source of the ancient fishing boats

A small reserve of coastal wetlands and totora reed beds north of the village, where the raw material for the caballitos de totora grows. This is where local craftsmen harvest the reeds to build and repair the traditional fishing boats — a process that requires replacing the reeds regularly as they become waterlogged.

The wetlands also support a variety of coastal and migratory birds, including herons, egrets, and various shorebirds. The reserve is a pleasant walk or short bike ride from the village centre.
