Amantani Island

Remote Titicaca island with traditional homestays and hilltop sunsets

A quiet island on Lake Titicaca, about three hours by boat from Puno. Amantani sees far fewer tourists than nearby Taquile, and the community maintains a traditional agricultural way of life that feels genuinely unchanged.

The island is small enough to walk around in a few hours. The highest hilltop is both a sacred site and the best sunset viewpoint on the lake — the 300-metre climb from the water can be tough if you haven't acclimatised to the altitude, but the path is smooth and straightforward.

The real draw is staying overnight with a local family. Homestays are simple but welcoming — expect meals of quinoa, potatoes, and local corn varieties. In the evening your host family will likely take you to a communal hall for music and dancing. Spanish helps but isn't essential; the warmth transcends the language barrier.

You can visit on a multi-day tour from Puno or arrange the boat independently.
