La Islilla is a small fishing village south of Paita, worth a day trip from Piura. Hire a car with driver for the day (around 200 soles) and once there, arrange a boat ride from the fishermen. They will take you around the offshore island, which is home to enormous colonies of seabirds and a healthy population of sea lions. The village itself is quiet and authentic — a working fishing community, not a resort. Bring sunscreen and water; there are no tourist facilities to speak of.
