Colán

Beach town with South America's oldest church

Colán is a laid-back beach town just north of Paita, where the coastal cliffs give way to a flat stretch of sandy coastline backed by palms. The beach is wide and warm, lined with small tropical hotels and rustic seafood restaurants where ceviche comes straight from the morning catch.

What makes Colán historically remarkable is the Iglesia San Lucas, widely considered the oldest church in South America and the first on the Southern Pacific coast. The Spanish built it here in the 1530s, drawn by the natural harbor and flat coastal plain. The wooden church still stands, weathered but intact, a striking sight against the tropical backdrop.

The vibe is mellow and unhurried. Colán draws mostly Peruvian families on weekends and holidays, so outside peak times you may have long stretches of beach largely to yourself.
