Baños Termales de San José

Thermal pools on the outskirts of town

About 14 km northwest of Tarapoto, in the hills above Morales, the Baños Termales de San José are a small complex of warm-water sulphurous pools, fed by springs that flow from the same cloud-forest hydrology that powers the nearby waterfalls. The water sits at around 30 to 36°C, hot enough to soak in even in the tropical climate — locals come at sunset when the air finally cools.

There are several pools at different temperatures, a few changing rooms, and a simple restaurant on site. Mototaxis from Tarapoto take 30 minutes; the round trip is best combined with the Ahuashiyacu waterfall, which is a short detour further up the same road.
