Day Trips

Tarapoto punches well above its weight as a base for day trips. The jungle begins immediately at the edge of town, and within two hours in almost any direction you can reach waterfalls, lakes, indigenous villages, and river scenery that most visitors don't expect so close to a city with a functioning airport.

Catarata de Ahuashiyacu is the most popular outing: a 40-metre waterfall 14 km from the centre on the road toward Yurimaguas, reached by a well-maintained trail with stone steps. Budget half a morning — the walk up takes about 20 minutes. A mototaxi from town will bring you to the entrance, wait, and take you back for a modest fare.

Laguna Venecia is only about 5 km from the city and makes a gentle half-day outing. It's a small, calm lake where you can rent paddle boats, swim, and visit a small zoo with monkeys that will happily take bananas from your hand. Taxis from the corner of San Martín and Ramírez Hurtado are the easiest way to get there.

For something further, Laguna Azul (Lago Sauce) is a clear, warm jungle lake about two hours south by combi or hired car. Most people stay a night to justify the road — and the afternoon light on the water makes that easy to do. Chazuta, a 90-minute drive east along the Huallaga river, is worth a day for the pottery alone: the Wasichay women's collective fires black earthenware using techniques that haven't changed in generations, and you can buy directly from the makers.

When planning a day trip, check the local paper or ask at your hotel about shared combis and vans — services to Sauce, Chazuta, and other destinations often fill up quickly. Drivers on Sundays can be scarce, so arrange transport in advance if you're travelling at the weekend. Those short on time can hire a taxi driver for a full day and visit two or three spots in a single run.
