Nieuw Nickerie is Suriname's western outpost and the practical base for Bigi Pan. The long road from Paramaribo crosses rivers, coconut country, and flat rice polders before reaching a low-rise town where daily life is tied to farming, fishing, and the nearby Guyanese border.
The public market, the Commissioner’s Office, and the lotus-filled Zoetwater Canal make a gentle circuit rather than a packed sightseeing day. Later, walk the sea wall for the breeze. The town slows markedly in the early afternoon, when many shops close for a few hours.
Most visitors stay only long enough to arrange a Bigi Pan boat. It is still worth allowing an evening rather than treating the town as a transport depot. Shared taxis and minibuses connect it with Paramaribo, but departure times are informal; independent transport gives more control over stops along the coast.
