The Saamaka Marron Museum tells the history of the Saamaka people in a place where that history remains lived experience. Displays address escape from slavery, settlement along the river, social life, tools, textiles, and art, with locally made woodcarving at the centre of the collection.
This community museum offers a perspective that Paramaribo's colonial buildings cannot. Visit with someone able to explain the objects and their context, and confirm access before making the boat journey. Photography may not be appropriate everywhere; ask first.
