The most common way to reach Colonia del Sacramento is by fast ferry from Buenos Aires. Buquebus and Colonia Express both operate high-speed catamaran services that cross the Río de la Plata in about 1 hour. Services run multiple times daily. The ferry terminal in Colonia is at the edge of the Barrio Histórico, and it is possible to book day trips from Buenos Aires that include the return crossing and free time in town.
From Montevideo, Colonia is about 180 kilometres by road — approximately 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. Regular bus services connect the two cities, and the road passes through gentle Uruguayan countryside. There is also a slower ferry option from Montevideo.
By car from Montevideo, the drive along Route 1 is straightforward. Colonia is also accessible by car from Argentina via the nearby San Martín Bridge over the Uruguay River, further north.
