Pueblo Tannat is at Carmelo, about an hour north-west of Colonia del Sacramento along the Río de la Plata, in the stretch of Colonia department that has quietly become Uruguay's best wine country. It is a bodega with a restaurant attached rather than a cellar door with a snack counter, and the enoturismo programme is built to fill an afternoon.
Tannat is the point, as the name says. The grape came from south-west France, where it makes something tannic and difficult, and in Uruguayan soil it turned into the national red. Tasting it where it is grown, next to the barrels, is a different proposition from meeting it on a restaurant list in Montevideo.
Note the location: their Ministry of Tourism registration gives Colonia del Sacramento, but the address they publish and operate from is in Carmelo, which is where the pin sits. Reserve by WhatsApp or at the address above.
