The Museum of Man and Technology occupies a handsome building near the centre of Salto and covers the archaeology, natural history and industrial heritage of the Salto department. The permanent collection includes pre-Columbian artefacts from the region, fossils, and exhibits on the mate culture and citrus industry that define the local economy. There is also material on the construction of the Salto Grande Dam and its social impact on the region.
The museum is one of the better provincial museums in Uruguay — well-organised and genuinely informative about the region's particular character. Ask at the entrance about temporary exhibitions, which often focus on local artists.
