Baño de la India

The most popular walking trail in the Villa Serrana area follows the Arroyo Yerbal downstream to a small waterfall that drops into a rock-lined pool. The path from the village takes about thirty minutes on well-marked trail through native hillside forest. The pool below the falls is cold even in summer but swimmable, and the surrounding rock faces are covered in ferns and mosses that give the place a different character from the open hillside landscape around it.

The trail is easy and suitable for children. It can be combined with a longer loop through the surrounding hills for a half-day walk. Bring water — the return uphill in summer gets warm.

A story
The name — "bath of the Indian woman" — comes from a local legend about an indigenous woman who bathed in the pool below the waterfall. The story is vague enough to have accumulated variations over the decades, but the name stuck, and the waterfall has been a destination for visitors from Minas and Montevideo since long before anyone thought to call it ecotourism.
