The Ecomuseo del Caroní is a cultural center built into the infrastructure of the Macagua hydroelectric dam, combining a natural history museum with art galleries and exhibits on the Caroní River ecosystem and the indigenous Pemón people who have lived along it for centuries. The building itself is architecturally unusual — set into the dam structure, with the river visible through large windows.
The collections cover the geology of the Guiana Highlands, the biodiversity of the Caroní watershed, and the impact of dam construction on the river ecosystem. It is one of the more thoughtful museums in Venezuela's industrial interior and worth a visit if you have any interest in the Gran Sabana region you may be about to enter.
