Parque Cachamay

Parque Cachamay is Ciudad Guayana's main green space, built around the Cachamay waterfalls on the Caroní River where it passes through the urban area. The falls are modest in scale but the surrounding forest park is a genuine relief from the industrial landscape of the rest of the city. There are walking paths along the riverbank, and the sound and spray of the falls make it a pleasant spot to spend an hour or two.

The park is free to enter and popular with local families on weekends. Capybaras sometimes wander the grounds near the river, and the birdlife in the gallery forest is worth attention — this stretch of the Caroní corridor is an important bird migration route.

A story
The falls at Cachamay were here long before the city was. When urban planners laid out the new city of Santo Tomé de Guayana in the 1960s, they deliberately incorporated the waterfall and its surrounding forest into the city plan — one of the few moments of foresight in what was otherwise a utilitarian exercise in industrial urbanism.
