Getting There

Colonia Tovar lies about 60 km west of Caracas as the crow flies but more than two hours by road, on a winding mountain route that climbs from the coast to 1,800 metres. The drive begins on the highway towards Maracay and turns north into the Cordillera de la Costa at El Junquito, from where the road narrows and snakes through cloud forest to the colony. Stopping for the view at El Junquito is part of the trip.

Shared taxis (carritos por puesto) run from El Junquito most days, with more frequent services on weekends when the market draws crowds from Caracas. Renting a car gives the most flexibility but the road can be slow in mist or rain — start early and budget for a slow return. Weekends bring serious traffic in both directions; midweek visits are quieter.
