Canaima National Park

The Gran Sabana lies entirely within Canaima National Park — a vast UNESCO World Heritage Site of tepuis, savanna, and waterfalls that also covers the territory around Angel Falls to the west. Most of what visitors think of as the "Gran Sabana" is the eastern half of the park, accessible by the Troncal 10 highway.

Practical access is straightforward: there is no entrance gate along the road, and the headquarters at Luepa handles permits for treks and overnight camping. Pemón guides are required for anything off the main road, including all tepui ascents. The western half of the park, around Canaima Lagoon and Angel Falls, is reached by air from Ciudad Bolívar or Puerto Ordaz.

A story
Canaima is the second-largest national park in Venezuela and one of the largest in the world at 30,000 square kilometres — bigger than Belgium. Roughly 65 percent of its surface is tepui — flat-topped sandstone plateaus that have stood since before the Atlantic Ocean existed.
