Kavanayén

Kavanayén is a Pemón village 70 km off the Troncal 10 on a long unpaved spur — high on the plateau at 1,200 metres, surrounded by Karwai, Sororopán, and other tepuis. It was founded as a Capuchin mission in 1942 and the stone-block mission church still anchors the settlement.

The drive in is part of the appeal: open savanna, scattered moriche palms, and views to a dozen tepuis. Several waterfalls (Torón, Karuay) lie within day-walk distance with a guide. The village has very basic posadas and a small shop. Fuel, food, and patience for the road are essential — the spur is rough and impassable in heavy rain.

A story
The mission church and most of the village houses are built from blocks of pink-and-white sandstone cut from the surrounding plateau — Kavanayén is the only Gran Sabana settlement built almost entirely from local tepui rock.
