Maracaibo's most famous attraction is not in the city itself but visible from it: the Catatumbo Lightning, which illuminates the horizon over Lake Maracaibo on most nights of the year. In the city, the restored historic waterfront district and the Basilica de la Chinita are worth a morning each. The Rafael Urdaneta Bridge — crossing the lake on the approach from the east — is one of Venezuela's great engineering landmarks.
