Playa Juan Griego

The beach curves along the entire length of the town's waterfront, a wide bay of calm water facing west. It is not the most dramatic beach on Margarita Island — the sand is coarser and the water less clear than the south coast resorts — but that is rather the point. This is a working fishing beach, not a resort one. Boats are hauled up on the sand, nets are spread to dry, and the restaurants along the waterfront serve whatever came in that morning.

In the evening the beach transforms. As the sun angles toward the water, the whole bay fills with amber light and the fishing boats anchored offshore become silhouettes. People pull chairs to the waterfront and the restaurants put out tables directly on the sand. It is the kind of easy, cheap, unpretentious evening that is hard to find at more developed beaches.
