The small whitewashed church at the head of Pampatar Bay is a working parish church and the destination of local fishermen before any serious sea voyage. The bell tower, the simple Atlantic-coast colonial façade, and the painted interior are no match for the great basilicas of mainland Venezuela, but the place has the unhurried atmosphere of a coastal village church that has been in continuous use for three centuries.
The carved figure of the Good Voyage Christ, said to have arrived by sea in the 1600s, is the centrepiece. The church is usually open in the morning and around evening Mass; a quiet ten minutes inside before a walk along the malecón is the standard local sequence.
