Pampatar Bay

The natural deep bay at Pampatar is the reason the town exists — its shape gave the colonial fleet shelter from the Atlantic swells and the prevailing north-east winds, and it still serves as the anchorage for the fishing fleet and a scatter of small yachts. The water inside the bay is calm even on rough days, and the beach along the inner curve is one of the few in the area where children can swim without surf.

A walk along the malecón at the head of the bay is the standard early-evening activity in Pampatar: from the central church (Iglesia del Santisimo Cristo del Buen Viaje) at one end past restaurants and ice-cream sellers to the fortress at the other. The boats coming in at sunset, the local fishermen mending nets on the sand, and the line of small palms make the half-kilometre walk the social heart of the town.
