Coromoto Ice Cream Shop

Heladería Coromoto near Plaza Bolívar holds the Guinness World Record for the most ice cream flavours offered — currently more than 900, ranging from straightforward mango and coconut to bizarre experiments like smoked trout, garlic, avocado soup, and spaghetti. Not all flavours are available every day; the menu rotates.

The shop is a genuine Mérida institution, packed with locals and visitors alike. The unusual flavours are not a gimmick: many are surprisingly good, and trying the stranger ones is part of the experience. Go with an open mind and low expectations for any single flavour — the pleasure is in the variety and the spectacle of the menu itself.

A story
Coromoto entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1988 for offering the greatest number of ice cream flavours of any shop in the world — at the time, 613. The count has since grown past 900. Flavours include smoked trout, black beans with cheese, rice with milk, spaghetti, and beer, alongside more conventional tropical options. The owner, Manuel da Silva Oliveira, a Portuguese immigrant, began the experiment in 1980 and never stopped.
