Things to Do

The Mukumbarí Cable Car is the city's defining attraction — a four-stage ascent from the city centre at 1,577 metres to Pico Espejo at 4,765 metres, making it one of the highest cable cars in the world. The views of the Andean peaks and the valley below are extraordinary on clear mornings.

The city centre itself is rewarding on foot. Plaza Bolívar is the focal point of the colonial core, flanked by the cathedral and surrounded by the animated street life of a university city. The Cathedral Basilica of Mérida is worth entering for its size and the contrast it provides to the mountains visible from the atrium.

Mérida is a major base for Andean adventure activities. Sierra Nevada National Park, accessible from the city, offers trekking to high-altitude peaks and glacial lakes — including Laguna Mucubají at 3,575 metres. Paragliding launches from the cable car stations above La Aguada. Local operators run white-water rafting, mountain biking, and tours to the wildlife-rich Los Llanos plains to the east.

Los Aleros, about 25 kilometres from the city centre in the Andean foothills, is a meticulously recreated traditional Andean village from the 1930s — more atmospheric than a theme park, with resident artisans, live music, and Andean food served in period surroundings.

The city is also famous for its Coromoto Ice Cream Shop, which holds a Guinness World Record for the most flavours offered — over 900, including trout, black beans, and spaghetti. It is a genuine local obsession, not a tourist gimmick.
