Bars and Cafes

Algeria is a Muslim country and alcohol is not openly sold or consumed in most of the country, including Batna. What you have instead is a café culture that serves as a genuinely sociable public life. Coffee shops around the central square and along the main boulevards open early and stay open late, serving espresso, café au lait (the French influence lingers on), and mint tea. Pastry shops sell almond sweets, baklava, and makroud — a semolina and date pastry that is a regional speciality of the Aurès and the Hodna plain.

For juice, there are small stalls around the market area serving fresh-squeezed orange and pomegranate juice in season. The social life of the city plays out in these cafés in the evening, and sitting over a coffee for an hour is one of the better ways to observe daily Algerian life.
