Taghit is reached from Béchar, about 90 kilometres to the south by road. Béchar has an airport with connections to Algiers (Air Algérie operates regular flights), making it the practical gateway to the western Sahara. From Béchar, take a grand taxi or arrange a hire car for the drive north — the road is paved and in reasonable condition.
From Algiers by road is a long two-day drive across the High Plateau. Buses run between Algiers and Béchar, but the journey is lengthy. There is no rail connection to Taghit. If you are joining an organised Sahara tour (the most common way for foreign visitors to reach this region), transport will normally be arranged from Béchar or Algiers.
A visa is required for most nationalities visiting Algeria, and it must typically be arranged in advance. The application process is not quick; allow at least four to six weeks.
