Awlad al-Imam Madrasa and Mosque

In the heart of the medina, the Awlad al-Imam complex is a Zayyanid madrasa founded in the early fourteenth century by Sultan Abu Hammu Musa I for the sons of an esteemed scholar (the imam of the title). It is a small, intimate building organised around a central courtyard with student cells on two levels, faced with carved plaster panels and zellij dado tiles.

The associated mosque next door is still in use and only partly accessible to non-Muslims. The madrasa itself, restored in the early 2000s, is open as a heritage site with light interpretation. Combine with the Great Mosque, just a few minutes away.
