The Maiombe Forest covers much of inland Cabinda and represents one of the last large remnants of tropical rainforest in the Congo Basin's western fringe. It is a fragment of a much larger forest system that once stretched continuously across equatorial Africa, and it shelters an exceptional range of wildlife including western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants, and dozens of primate species found nowhere else.
Access into the forest interior is difficult and requires local guides — there are no formal park facilities or tourist infrastructure of any kind. The most realistic visits are to the forest edge, where the vegetation is dense and birdlife extraordinary. Reaching deeper into the forest means negotiating rough tracks, usually by 4WD, and spending nights in village guesthouses. Independent travel into the forest interior is not recommended; engage a local fixer or the Cabinda provincial authorities for assistance.
