Getting There

The easiest way to reach Lubango is by air. TAAG Angola Airlines operates scheduled flights from Luanda's Quatro de Fevereiro Airport to Lubango's Mukanka Airport, with the flight taking around 90 minutes. Booking in advance is advisable; the aircraft are usually full, and the Lubango route is one of TAAG's busier domestic services.

Overland from Luanda is a long undertaking. The route runs south via Benguela and Huambo — over 700 kilometres — and road conditions vary considerably. The section between Luanda and Benguela is generally manageable, but the roads inland can be slow and in poor repair in places, particularly after the rainy season. Budget a full day at minimum and carry a spare tyre. From the south, the Serra da Leba road connects Lubango to Namibe and the coast; this stretch is one of the best-maintained in Angola and the drive is genuinely spectacular.
