Mercado Municipal

The Mercado Municipal is the commercial heart of Lubango and the most honest representation of daily life in the city. Stalls overflow with fresh produce from the plateau farms — cassava, sweet potato, maize, and vegetables in abundance — alongside imported goods, cheap electronics, fabric, and the kind of miscellaneous hardware that gets repurposed and fixed rather than replaced. The noise and movement are constant, and the food section at the back serves up grilled meat and stew that feeds the traders and the workers who keep the market running.

Go in the morning when the produce is freshest and the crowds are at their most purposeful. You can buy just about anything here, and even if you are not shopping, walking through a busy African market is one of the best ways to take the temperature of a place. Lubango's market is large enough to get properly lost in, which is half the point.
