About 18 kilometres west of Lubango, the high plateau simply ends. At the Tundavala Gap the land drops more than 1,000 metres in a sheer, dramatic cliff face, the kind of view that makes you step back instinctively before stepping forward for a better look. On a clear day — and the dry season from June to September delivers many such days — you can see the vast lowland plains stretching all the way to the Atlantic horizon. The scale is difficult to process until you spot a small track winding through the bush far below and realise it is actually a full-sized road.
The site itself is easily accessible by car from Lubango along a reasonable dirt road, and there is a designated viewpoint with enough space to walk along the escarpment edge. Bring a jacket — the wind off the plateau can be fierce even in warm weather — and go in the morning before the afternoon cloud rolls in from the coast. This is the most spectacular natural viewpoint in southern Angola, and one of the best on the continent.
