Cangandala National Park

About 60 km south of Malanje, the park is small (630 km²) and the road in is rough, but it is the most reliable place anywhere to see giant sable antelope — there are essentially none left in the wild outside Angola. Visits are by arrangement with park staff or a Luanda-based tour operator, and access to the sable enclosure depends on current conservation rules.

Even if you do not see the sable up close, the miombo woodland and the slow rivers are beautiful and easily worth a day from Malanje. Bring water, fuel, and patience.

A story
Cangandala is Angola's smallest national park, but its claim to fame is enormous — it is the last refuge of the giant sable antelope, the Palanca Negra Gigante, one of the rarest large mammals on Earth and a national symbol of Angola. After near-extinction during the civil war, the herd has slowly recovered behind a fenced sanctuary within the park.
