A small unassuming square in the town centre, the official starting point of the Route des Esclaves. This was the auction square of Ouidah — the place where captives, marched in from the inland slaving raids, were sold to European traders before being walked the three kilometres to the boats.
A simple memorial sculpture occupies the centre. There is no museum here; the meaning is the place itself. Most guided walks begin here, with the guide explaining the colour-coding of slave-trading factions and the role of Place Chacha before setting off down the road towards the beach.
