Getting There

Porto-Novo is 30 km east of Cotonou, Benin's economic capital and the country's main transport hub. The most practical way to arrive is by bush taxi (taxi-brousse) or shared minibus from Cotonou's Gare de Jonquet, a journey of roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. Zémidjan (motorcycle taxis) also make the run cheaply.

The Cotonou-Lagos highway passes through Porto-Novo, and buses and shared taxis from Lagos, Nigeria, stop here. The Nigerian border at Kraké is about 12 km east of the city centre. Travellers crossing from Nigeria should be prepared for paperwork delays and varying formalities at the border post.

There is no rail connection. Cotonou's Cadjehoun Airport handles all international flights into southern Benin; Porto-Novo has no airport of its own.
