Ghanzi Trail Blazers

About eight kilometres from the centre of Ghanzi, Ghanzi Trail Blazers offers guided San Bushman experiences in a recreated traditional setting. San guides lead walks through the Kalahari bush, demonstrating tracking skills, plant knowledge, fire-making, and traditional hunting techniques using bows and poison-tipped arrows. The experience is hands-on — visitors are encouraged to try their hand at fire-making and tracking — and the guides' command of the bush is genuinely extraordinary.

The lodge also offers horse riding, swimming in a natural rock quarry, and fishing for bream. It is one of the more authentic San cultural experiences in Botswana, run with direct community involvement rather than as a staged performance. Overnight accommodation is available for those who want to experience a Kalahari sunrise without the long drive from Ghanzi.

A story
The San guides at Ghanzi Trail Blazers can find and light fire using two sticks in under a minute, identify edible and medicinal plants invisibly embedded in scrub that looks empty to the untrained eye, and track animal spoor across ground that appears featureless. These skills, honed over tens of thousands of years, are becoming rarer as younger San generations move into settled communities.
