Serowe is set against a range of rocky hills that rise sharply from the flat surrounding landscape. The hills are the town's defining geographical feature and give it a character quite different from Botswana's flat, arid interior. Walking trails lead up through the rocks to viewpoints over the village and the wide scrubland stretching to the horizon — at dusk or early morning, the light across the semi-desert is genuinely beautiful.
The hills are best explored in the cooler hours of the day, especially from June to August when daytime temperatures are mild and the air is clear. Take water and wear shoes with grip; the paths are informal and the rocks can be loose. The summit ridges provide a fine perspective on the scale of the village below — Serowe is one of the largest traditional settlements in sub-Saharan Africa.
