Getting There

Bujumbura International Airport (BJM) has regular connections to Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam, Kigali, and Entebbe. Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and RwandAir are the main carriers. The airport is about 10 kilometres north of the city centre.

By road, the main overland route is from Kigali in Rwanda (about four to five hours), with border crossings at Kayanza and Kobero. Bus services run between Bujumbura and Kigali daily. The border crossing at Cibitoke connects to eastern DRC, but this route should be checked for current security conditions before attempting.

There is no passenger rail service in Burundi. Lake ferries to Tanzania (Kigoma) and DRC (Kalemie) operate infrequently from the port.
