Lake Tanganyika Beaches

Lake Tanganyika is the defining feature of Bujumbura and one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa. The city sits on its northeastern shore, and the lake stretches south for hundreds of kilometres toward Tanzania and Zambia. The water is clear, warm, and safe to swim in — hippos tend to stay north of the city in the Rusizi wetlands, and the lake has no bilharzia in its deeper waters.

Saga Beach and Karera Beach, both within easy reach of the city centre, are where locals come to swim, drink, and socialise in the evenings. At sunset, the lake turns extraordinary colours and the Congolese mountains across the water glow in the light. On calm evenings, dugout canoes drift just offshore. If there is one reason to come to Bujumbura, this is it.

A story
Lake Tanganyika is the world's longest freshwater lake (676 kilometres) and the second deepest (1,470 metres). It sits in the East African Rift Valley, and its depth has kept it isolated for so long that it has developed a unique ecosystem: hundreds of species of cichlid fish found nowhere else on earth evolved here over millions of years of geological isolation.
