Christ the King Cathedral

The Cathedral of Christ the King is Gitega's most prominent landmark, a large Catholic church built in the colonial era that dominates the town from its hilltop position. The architecture is the heavy Romanesque-influenced style favoured by Belgian colonial missionaries — solid brick walls, round arches, and twin towers visible from most of the town.

The cathedral is still an active church and holds regular services attended by large congregations. Visitors are welcome outside service times. The interior is relatively plain but the building is well-maintained, and the hill setting offers good views over Gitega's rooftops. The cathedral compound contains a few ancillary church buildings and a garden. It is a short walk from the town centre.

A story
The Cathedral of Christ the King was built during the Belgian colonial period and serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Gitega — the metropolitan see for all of Burundi's Catholic dioceses. Burundi has one of the highest rates of Catholic affiliation in Africa, and the church's role in the country's history and conflicts has been significant and contested; the building carries a complex weight beyond its architectural interest.
