Gitega Airport

Gitega Airport serves as the local airfield for Burundi's political capital, with a basic runway and limited facilities. Scheduled commercial flights remain limited, with most international and domestic air travel still flowing through Bujumbura's more developed airport. Ongoing expansion plans aim to make Gitega Airport capable of handling regional jet services.

For travellers to Gitega, the airport is primarily of interest as a potential point of entry if expansion plans progress. Currently, overland transport from Bujumbura remains the standard approach. The airport is about 5 kilometres northwest of the city centre, a short taxi ride on the main road.

A story
Gitega Airport was designated as Burundi's new international airport following the 2019 decision to move the country's capital from Bujumbura to Gitega. Construction of expanded facilities began, but progress has been slow, and as of the early 2020s the airport remains primarily a domestic and light-aircraft facility. The symbolism of building an international gateway to the new political capital has outpaced the infrastructure — a pattern familiar in several African capitals that shifted their administrative centres in recent decades.
