Agostinho Neto Airport

Decommissioned runway on the cliff edge, now used as a seaside promenade

A short, decommissioned airstrip that runs along the cliff just outside town. Originally opened in 1962 to give Santo Antão a fragile link to Praia, it closed in 2000 after a string of close calls — the strip is wedged between cliffs and ocean, and the local winds made approaches treacherous.

Today the asphalt is a perfect seaside promenade, with the Atlantic on one side and the green ridges of Santo Antão on the other. It's where locals come at sunset to walk, fly kites, and watch the day end. A good place for a slow stroll with the wind in your face.

A story
The airport was Santo Antão's only air link to the rest of Cape Verde until it was closed in 2000 after pilots complained that the wind shear off the cliffs made approach genuinely dangerous. Since then the only way onto the island has been by ferry from São Vicente.
