The larger beach west of Ponta do Sol, reached either by boat or on foot along a thin path cut into the cliff. The sand is black volcanic and the swell rolls in heavily — this is a beach to walk and to look at, not to swim casually. The walk over from town takes about an hour each way and the views back toward the colour-washed houses and the green mountains behind them are reason enough to do it.
