KM5 District

KM5 — named for its distance along Avenue Boganda from the city centre — is the liveliest neighbourhood in Bangui: the place for cheap restaurants, music bars, street food, and the concentrated urban energy that the more formal city centre lacks. The neighbourhood has historically been predominantly Muslim and is the commercial heart of Bangui's Sudanese and Chadian trading community.

The area has seen serious intercommunal violence at various points during the post-2013 conflict and the security situation here has been volatile. Conditions change; get local advice before heading out, and do not go alone after dark. On a good day, KM5 is vivid, loud, and worth the visit. On a bad day, it is the last place you want to be. Treat this with appropriate caution.
