Marché Central

The Marché Central is Bangui's main market and the city's most animated public space. Several city blocks of densely packed stalls sell everything from bolts of printed fabric (some of the finest in Central Africa) to fresh produce, dried fish, hardware, and Chinese consumer goods. The fabric section is particularly good — the country produces some striking patterns, and traders from across the region sell here.

Bargaining is expected and good-humoured. The market gets crowded but the atmosphere is more curious than predatory — you will be noticed as a foreigner, approached by traders, and probably invited to drink tea. Keep a hand on your valuables in the densest sections, but relax. This is one of the better markets in Central Africa, and the best place to feel the pulse of the city.
