Kadutu sprawls across the southern flanks of the city above the Ruzizi outflow. It is the most populous of the three communes and the busiest in commercial terms, anchored by its huge main market and a dense grid of small workshops, churches, and informal housing. The streets are steep, the traffic is dense, and the rhythm is wholly local.
Visitors usually pass through Kadutu only to reach the market or the road south, but if you walk it slowly with a guide it tells you more about contemporary eastern Congo than any other corner of the city. Stick to daylight and keep an eye on your bag.
