The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace is the main Catholic church of Bukavu and the seat of the archdiocese. Completed in the 1950s, it is a striking piece of late-colonial modernist architecture — a tall, simple nave with strip windows, slim concrete buttresses, and a campanile that reads as a landmark from several points across the city.
Mass on Sundays is well worth attending if you have the time: lively congregational singing in Swahili and French, often accompanied by drumming. The cathedral is also the obvious orientation point — the road past its main door runs along the central ridge of the city.
