Getting There

Getting to Epulu requires genuine commitment. The nearest city with an airport is Kisangani, about 250 km to the west on the RN4. The road between Kisangani and Epulu — and continuing east to Beni and the Ugandan border — is one of the most challenging in Central Africa. In dry season (roughly December to February and June to September) a 4WD vehicle can manage the journey in 8–12 hours; in the wet season sections may be impassable for days at a time.

There is no scheduled bus service. Most travellers arrange transport through the Okapi Conservation Project or through local operators in Kisangani. From Uganda, the eastern approach via Beni and the RN4 is also possible but requires crossing through areas that have had ongoing security problems with armed groups. Check the current security situation carefully and thoroughly before traveling — the Ituri has been intermittently dangerous, and this is not a region where improvised travel is wise.
